The Big Switch Off

29 04 2008

Traditionally the television has been a friend to this household. While I wouldn’t say it’s been used as a babysitter, it has certainly been handy for keeping the munchkins occupied while things got done. Those days, however, have come to an end.

In recent times I’ve seen a direct correlation in Finn between poor behaviour and watching television which I’d never noticed before. We have a tantrum every time the telly has to be turned off and he is much more argumentative and naughty afterwards. So yesterday I decided that there is no more telly for the kids. I’ve even turned it off at the powerpoint.

I’ll let you know how this goes for us.

Yesterday Finn tripped and fell onto a cactus in our front yard. It’s safe to say that this is something you definitely want to avoid if you can manage it. Luckily only one hand connected with the spikes but that one hand had about twenty spikes stuck in it my the time I grabbed him two seconds later.

Now this the sort of moment that makes everyone freak out. And while Finn did cry and then howl a bit he also let me hold is hand still and take each and every one of these spikes out. As you would expect his hand was sore for a few hours but once Nicky put a bandage on the hand Finn was pretty happy really.

I think he’ll be a little more careful of spiky plants now. And we’d worry less about such catastrophes now that we know they are really pretty easily fixed.

Grown Up

Just in the last week or so Finn has been looking really grown up. Just the other day he was dead tired and too himself off to bed at dinner time. The next time I saw him was at ten that night and it seemed like he’d turned into a real proper grown-up kid.

This is especially true when he is wearing jeans and a shirt. I guess PJs or trackie dacks make us all look a bit more juvenile.

Fish in a barrel

Finn started off with 3 goldfish just over a week ago. Now he has two and I fairly certain he will soon have only one. None is also a distinct possibility. They have ich, which would have come with them from the pet shop. We are treating it but the fish are looking worse, rather than better, as the days go by.

We got the fish as a way to start teaching Finn about pet ownership and I suppose illness and death are part of that. I just wish we’d had a bit longer to just enjoy them.

Cyclist

Finn has had his bike since Christmas and a trike since he was very little. He’s not scared of bikes but he’s never really been particularly interested either. Now and then we go out for a ride but there is never much enthusiasm.

Today we went for a ride and while Finn might not have jumped for joy he did some really good riding all by himself. Nicky had it all worked out. She was pushing the pram and she would ask Finn who would win the race to the next little sign next to the path.

Finn does love to win a race so he peddled his little heart out. We were just thrilled to see him doing so well. I am sure that a big part of really enjoying anything is that sense that you are doing it well. If I happen to be right then he’ll be enjoying his Thomas bike very soon now.

God

That building is on the way to Highpoint.

Yes, that’s called a mosque and it’s a type of church. Do you now what people do in churches?

No

Yes you do.

They talk about God. When something goes wrong and you say God.

I guess you do.

And then you go to church and talk about the things that make you angry and make you say God.
