It seems like ages ago that we sent James and some other bits and pieces back to “the works” to have their paint fixed. So long ago that we’d pretty much given up on seeing any of them again.

We would drive over the bridge and Finn would point to where “the works” supposedly is and ask if we could go and see James there. I would pretend not to hear him and make a mental note to buy another James at some point. But I’d forget until the next car trip.

Today when I went to get the mail there was a big, padded envelope that I wasn’t expecting. Inside, all bright and shiny in their ‘new’ paint, were James and his tender, 2 fire engines and 2 signs, along with a couple of complementary recycling trucks.

Finn will be very pleased when he gets home. And I can drive over the bridge again without feeling guilty.

Just this weekend I took both Finn and Leila camping and we all had a lovely time. Luckily for all of us we had Joanna on the new site and she saved us time and time again.

On Sunday morning kids woke up very early and Finn wanted to go the toilet. Normally I would have just picked up Leila and we’d have all gone together. However she was in no position to be picked up so, with some trepidation, I sent Finn off one his own.

Our tent was about fifty metres from the toilets and we’d been a bunch of times already so I knew that Finn knew how everything worked. All the same this was the biggest trip he’d ever made without adult company and my heart raced for the three minutes he was gone. Not that I imagined that anything would happen but it raced all the same.

Sure enough he came back all pleased with himself and happy. He did tell me that he was “a bit scared” when he sat on the toilet my himself which is fair enough really.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that in a year and a bit he’ll be off to school all by himself.

Finn has his first ever ride on a waterslide today and he loved it. At first he didn’t want to go but then I got a bit sneaky. He lost sight of Aunty Fee and Danny and asked if they were on the waterslide. I knew damn well that they weren’t but suggested we climb the stairs and find out.

Of course once we got to the top we had to go on the slide just in case they were in the tunnel. Once he’d been on the slide once he loved it and happily lined up two more times and happily squealed all the way down.
