Finn wanted to do a science experiment, so we did this one.
Our question: Will a balloon float when it has water and air in it.
Equipment: Yellow party balloon, funnel and water
Prediction: It would float
Method: put water in the balloon with the funnel. Blow some more air into the balloon. Put the balloon in the basin with some water.
Observation: Yes, it floated.
Conclusion: A balloon with water and air is lighter than water.
The end.
Finn has been really enjoying the Wii. He likes Mario Kart the best, but we like it when he plays Wii Fit because it has him moving about. It’s not vigorous exercise but it is improving is co-ordination a little and any activity is better than none.
Finn is very taken with Scooby Doo. Although he finds bits really scary, he just loves it. This morning he wanted to make a story of his own, so here it is.
Finn had had a terrific Christmas. At the O’Meara’s Christmas, he ran around with his cousin Danny for hour after hour. At the Pelletier Christmas, he didn’t have kids to play with other than Leila, but he did have a terrific time.
He also collected a massive police of toys and games. It might be months before he has played with all of them. His favourites are his massive Power Miner Lego set and Mario Kart on the Nintendo Will (the game itself was the kids’ present to their Dad).
Night now, he is quite tired from all the excitement and having a quiet day at home watching movies and telly.
Tonight Finn was keen to play a video game. He chose Mario Kart. He’s played this before, but he always took forever to get around the track and the process was extremely frustrating all around.
Tonight was different. I think his six-year-old brain has turned some kind of corner. He was still a little random, but he was making steady time around the track and even manage to come sixth and seventh (out of eight places) a couple of times.
Soon enough, he’ll have delusions of really being able to drive.
There were reptiles at Danny’s party and Finn, for the most part, was being very brave indeed. Here he is holding an enormous lizard. Later on he decided that he’d had enough. After about eight parties in five weeks, I can’t say that I blame him.
I had a lovely birthday. It was so much fun. I had a fantastic time. Everyone jumped and played. Then people started to go home. All my presents were lovely.
Well, today is the day of the much-anticipated sixth birthday party. Finn has been talking about this for a long time, and there have been many variations on the plan enthusiastically discussed over the last year.
Happily, the party is at 10:30 this morning. Soon enough, we will be off to swimming and then the party will be close behind. I expected Finn to be full of chatter about the party this morning, but he’s not. He’s too busy watching his new Transformers DVDs.
I asked Finn if he wanted to record a podcast for his birthday or perhaps tell me what to write here. “No, thank you,” he replied. “I just want to play with my presents.”
He’s a kid who knows what he wants.
Finn was pretty unhappy when he woke up this morning. Nicky was first on the scene and found a little boy crying because he had a stiff and sore neck. He was quite convinced that he would never get better, and we both understood that feeling.
We’ve taken all the usual measures, and now he’s tucked up in our bed watching a Bionicles DVD on the portable player. I think he is entirely better yet, but he is comfortable and cheerful. With any luck, he’ll be alright to get up and go to his day at the school holiday program today.
